Freestyle Canoeing - New Event for 2008Exhibition Performance Saturday 4 PMPaddling Events AreaInstructional Session Sunday 10:30 AMMcDanel’s Launch AreaFreestyle Canoeing is a style of paddling which pays particular attention to Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion (“for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction”). It combines this with an intimate knowledge of how a canoe wants to move in the water and the ways in which one can use and enhance those tendencies to maximum advantage, along with a subtlety of paddle placement and action, to produce exceptionally fluid and graceful movement. Those who do this well can make a canoe move in ways which are both amazing and beautiful to watch. In the Performance segment, several freestylers will paddle their canoes in 2 or 3 minute “routines” to musical accompaniment, and in costume. You will believe a canoe can dance! The Instructional Session will teach some of the basic freestyle moves and techniques. It is open to one and all, but you must bring your own canoe, paddle, and PFD (PFD’s are required on the water). No equipment will be provided. This class is not for beginning paddlers. You must have some basic canoe paddling skills and an ability to reliably handle a canoe and make it go where you want it to go. While the techniques and moves that will be taught are certainly flashy and fun, they are not just for show. In learning how to do some of these things, one learns about balance, about efficient and effective paddling, and boat control - all of which skills serve one well on moving water. Or on Lake Arthur. No charge.
